Major breakthroughs result from a combination of factors such as chance and necessity, sensitivity and intuition, perseverance and intellectual courage. The advent of vaccines, antibiotics, aspirin, insulin, anesthetics, vitamins and others provides a series of stories of human character and intellect, mostly of the scientists, who had also to show courage, perseverance and faith to have their discoveries accepted and new treatments implemented, often with the aid of unexpected figures.
Dr Cabanchik is a Professor Emeritus A&M Delta Pergola Chair in Life Sciences at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. He was born in Argentina, educated in Biochemistry and Medicine in Israel, the US and Canada. He is the former Head of the Institute of Life Sciences of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and President of the International Society for the Study of Iron in Health and Disease
