An unexpected phone call from an organization called Operation Benjamin opened up a surprise chapter in Sue's family history.
Operation Benjamin is a non-profit organization that locates the graves of American-Jewish soldiers who were killed in Europe during World War II whose graves were incorrectly marked by a cross, and then replaces them with a Star of David.
Sue’s grandmother’s younger brother was killed in France during World War II and buried under a cross, even though he was Jewish. But the details of his involvement in the war is fascinating, involving the US Army, the OSS (later CIA), the British, the Germans, and the highly secret Ultra Project.
Sue Reiss grew up in San Antonio, Texas and graduated from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, with a degree in Judaic Studies and Comparative Literature.
She made Aliya in 1978 and was among the founding members of Shorashim. She started her professional career as a translator and technical writer, and later into instructional design and curriculum development.
Sue’s hobbies include writing modern midrash, Israeli folk dancing, and her grandchildren.
