Jewish tradition dates the genesis of Jewish presence on the Iberian Peninsula to the time of King Solomon, though active communal life in Iberia likely originated during the Roman Empire. In the Late Middle Ages, increased persecution, discrimination, and forced conversions ensued due to political, cultural, and social developments culminating with the establishment of the Spanish Inquisition in 1478 and the royal decree to expel Spanish Jewry in 1492. This led to the worldwide Sefardic diaspora. More than 25 generations later, this extraordinary legacy lives on around the globe. |
Dr. Isaac Amon is Director of Academic Research & Program Development at Jewish Heritage Alliance, a global organization whose core mission is to research and promote the story of Sefarad, a sweeping segment of Jewish and world history.
