Dr. Diana Barshaw was a research scientist and professor in the field of behavior and ecology of marine animals from 1988 to 2004. Starting in 2005 she wrote a monthly column for the Jerusalem Post called ‘Wild Israel’ and a blog for the Times of Israel. On her website http://www.dianabarshaw.com/ she describes the Israel National Trail and has compiled a guide to hiking the trails of the Carmel Mountains. Diana has recently been certified as an Israeli Tour Guide.
NOTE: There is an entrance fee to the Hai Bar National Park, 11 shekels for an Israeli Senior Citizen, 22 for adults, free to holders of the National Parks Pass. Remember your RavKav or other method to pay for the Cable Car ride (5.5 shekels).
For those starting at Lev Hamifratz, we will ascend in the Cable Cars up to the top station, alighting at Haifa University. When everyone meets at the top station, our guide, Diana Barshaw, will tell us about the recent developments of Haifa’s Public Transportation. The walk to the Hai-Bar Nature Reserve is fairly flat for about 2km. We’ll walk around the park which is devoted to the raising of endangered and extinct animals of the region and their possible re-introduction to the wild. The return journey to the Cable Car Station is about 3km via a different route. Diana will discuss the Carmel Forest ecosystem and the animals in the park.
NOTE: Registration will be limited so please register early.
