Pablo Picasso: Les Demoiselles d’Avignon 1906-1907
Picasso was a 25-year-old Spanish immigrant to France when he painted this iconic work.
On his journey to the finished painting, he wanted to respond to Paul Cezanne’s bathers.
This work integrated his fascination with collections at the ethnographic museums, as well as the lusts and anxieties wrapped up in his own, complex relationship with women.

This lecture will take us through the life and work of Salvador Dali, the surrealist Spanish artist – renowned for his technical skill, precise draftsmanship, and the striking and bizarre images in his work.

Mannerism: Elegant Art
Derived from the Italian “maniera”, meaning simply “style”. The sixteenth-century artist and critic Vasari – himself a mannerist – believed that excellence in painting demanded refinement, the richness of invention, and virtuoso technique, criteria that emphasized the artist’s intellect. Seen as bizarre, sometimes acid color, its illogical compression of space, the elongated proportions, and exaggerated anatomy of figures in convoluted, serpentine poses - frequently create a feeling of anxiety for the viewer.

Does the Mona Lisa have a Moustache? Classical Works in Contemporary Translations.
Many contemporary artists refer to, react to and even copy masterpieces that preceded them and thereby re-examine the boundaries of the work and the medium in which thy operate.
This lecture will present some of the most prominent examples nowadays, examples that can be funny annoying and most definitely raise questions.
